The problem: Our user personas hadn’t been updated in 3+ years. Several acquisitions and significant changes in company direction had happened since the update.

Project background.

Our personas were outdated and in some cases, no longer relevant. New personas needed to be created based on our users today. We needed the personas to cover our different products and use cases, which were numerous.

Mission.

I created a mission statement to help us stay focused on creating the personas we needed.

Communicate within our organisation our target user’s expectations, concerns and motivations so we can be better equipped to provide an experience that will satisfy their needs.

I also focused on defining personas by unique motivations and behaviours, rather than roles.

Research.

Once I had gone through a process of identifying the personas we would need, I held interviews with people that fit the description of each persona.

Method

Interviews were done over the phone and on Teams. I got users to answer a series of questions to allow me to gather information to create a persona. I gathered information about demographics, personality, goals and motivations, work habits, likes / dislikes and sources of information. I also researched reliable studies online where relevant.

I gathered the findings from the various interviews for each persona, grouped them into themes and created the persona. I created a scale with several categories for each persona.

Communication & presentation.

Method

I created a simple website to house the personas so that they were easy for us to continually update and reference. I created a video using Adobe Premiere Rush to share the personas with the rest of the business. I then created a persona committee with relevant co-workers who was responsible for meeting every 3 months to look at the persona and make changes if new research or insights from things like surveys had been gained. The idea was to make sure they weren’t forgotten, and always relevant and up-to-date.
